01 The Trip

About this excursion.

The full-day deep sea fishing charter is the trip for serious anglers. 8 hours on the water is what it takes to reach the deep-water seamounts off Roatan, spend real time working the drop-offs, and give yourself the best statistical shot at Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo. Half-day trips fish the closer water. Full-day trips reach the water where the trophies actually live.

Dos Reyes Roatan Charter runs the full-day trip from Gibson Bight Marina in Sandy Bay. Our 2024 custom 34-foot center console with twin Yamaha 250HP motors gets you to the deep water 4x faster than the standard island charter, which is the difference between spending most of the day commuting and spending most of the day fishing.

The Deep-Water Route

Standard full-day departures leave the marina between 6:00 and 7:00 AM with a target return in the mid-afternoon. Captain Julio Bodden chooses the day's route based on wind, current, and recent bite reports, but the standard offshore run takes us out past the reef edge to the Cayman Trench drop-off and the outer seamounts. This is water most local charters cannot reach in a day. Because our vessel runs at high speed on outboards instead of diesel inboards, we get there fast, we fish there long, and we get back without burning the whole day on transit.

Hour-by-Hour: What a Full Day Actually Looks Like

Half-day charters compress the day into a fast in-and-out at the closer water. The full-day charter is different. Here is how the 8 hours unfold when the weather cooperates:

  • Hour 1 (6:30 to 7:30 AM): Depart Gibson Bight Marina. Rig lines, deploy the outrigger spread, and run out past the reef edge at cruising speed. Coffee, fresh fruit, and a briefing on the day's target species while the boat covers water.
  • Hours 2 to 4 (7:30 to 10:30 AM): First troll pass along the drop-off. Prime early-morning bite window. Peak time to raise Blue Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna. If the surface bite goes quiet, we reposition and start working the outer seamounts with high-speed skirted lures.
  • Hours 5 to 6 (10:30 AM to 12:30 PM): Vertical jig and deep-drop with the electric reel over the offshore humps and pinnacles. Depths from 400 to 1,200 feet target Snowy Grouper, Yellowedge Grouper, and Queen Snapper — reef species most charters never reach because the return trip would eat their whole day.
  • Hour 7 (12:30 to 1:30 PM): Lunch break drifting on the deep water while lines soak. Fresh sandwiches, snacks, and cold drinks. Kids and non-anglers can stretch on the front deck.
  • Hour 8 (1:30 to 2:30 PM): Second troll pass on the way back inshore, hitting productive current lines and floating debris for Mahi-Mahi. Return to Gibson Bight Marina by mid-afternoon.

Electric Reel Deep-Drop Technique — Only on the Full Day

The full-day charter is the only trip in our fleet that includes electric reel deep-drop fishing to 1,200 feet. Deep-drop uses a heavy weighted rig with squid or bonito strip on multi-hook chicken rigs. The electric reel does the retrieval work from depth, which matters because a manual crank from 1,000-plus feet is a 15-minute cardio workout per drop. Target species include Snowy Grouper (peak in cooler months at 600 to 900 ft), Yellowedge Grouper (year-round at 700 to 1,100 ft), Queen Snapper (peak March to October at 500 to 800 ft), and Barrelfish (bonus catch, deep pinnacles). This gear and technique require the 8-hour window and the run to true offshore water. Half-day charters do not have the time budget for deep-drop and do not carry the electric reel.

Big Game Species Targeted

Full-day range gives us access to Roatan's trophy species:

  • Blue Marlin — the deep-water trophy of the Bay Islands. Peak season is November through February, with strong action into March.
  • Yellowfin Tuna — high-speed, high-fight tuna moving through Roatan's offshore water March through September. Live bait and vertical jigging produce the best hookups.
  • Wahoo — fast, aggressive strikes on high-speed trolled skirts and rigged ballyhoo. Best action in the cooler months.
  • Mahi-Mahi (Dorado) — vibrant, acrobatic, in schools around floating structure. Peak December through May.

Full breakdown by month is on our Roatan Fish Species and Best Bite Seasons Guide.

Vessel, Electronics, and Crew

The full-day charter runs on our 2024 custom 34-foot center console. Twin Yamaha 250HP commercial outboards, Garmin plotters and GPS with sonar for precision drop-off positioning, VHF marine radio and EPIRB for satellite communication, USCG-approved safety gear for all ages, expanded shade canopy, premium ergonomic seating, high-fidelity Bluetooth sound system, integrated coolers, and a clean private marine head. Captain Julio Bodden and first mate Eddie lead every trip. The full spec sheet is on our 2024 Boat page.

Cruise Passenger Advisory

The full-day charter is designed for guests staying on the island — hotels, private rentals, or our partner Tree Top Suites & Resort. Because it runs 8 hours from marina to marina, it exceeds the typical cruise port window. Cruise passengers should book the morning half-day fishing charter instead, which fits comfortably inside the Back-to-Ship Guarantee.
