Flat fishing is the technical, sight-casting end of Roatan sport fishing. Where deep sea and reef trips are about covering water, flat fishing is about spotting fish in a foot or two of crystal-clear water and putting a fly or light lure exactly where it needs to go. Our private half-day flat fishing charter targets Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, snapper, jacks, and barracuda on the shallow tidal flats and back-country channels off Sandy Bay.
Dos Reyes Roatan Charter departs Gibson Bight Marina in Sandy Bay. The 2024 custom 34-foot center console gets you to the flats fast, but the actual fishing happens either from the boat in shallow water or by wading on the sand where the fish are.

Where We Fish
The Sandy Bay flats hold consistent Bonefish year-round, with the strongest action February through April when the water warms and the schools push shallow. Larger back-country channels off Coxen Hole hold Permit and cruising Tarpon depending on the season. Captain Julio Bodden and first mate Eddie know these flats intimately — they choose the route based on tide stage, wind, and what species you specifically want to target.
Species You Will Target
- Bonefish — year-round, peak February through April. Light tackle sight-casting on the tailing schools.
- Permit — March through July, one of the most difficult species in Caribbean fishing. Sight-cast to tailing fish in shallow water.
- Tarpon — year-round with peak June through August. Rolling schools in the mangrove backwaters and outer channels.
- Jacks — Crevalle Jack and Horse-Eye Jack, aggressive and consistent light-tackle target.
- Snapper and Grouper — reef-edge species reachable on a flat-fishing trip when the tide is right.
- Barracuda — flats predator, hits large streamers and tube lures.

Gear and Technique
All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are provided. Light tackle spinning setups for Bonefish and Permit, heavier gear for Tarpon and jacks. If you prefer to bring your own fly rod, you are welcome to — 8 through 12 weight rods cover the full range of flats species in Roatan. Captain Julio and first mate Eddie coach cast placement, retrieve, and hook set based on the target species and what you are used to fishing at home.
Who This Trip Is For
Flat fishing rewards patience, accuracy, and sharp eyes. It is ideal for solo anglers, couples, or small groups who want a technical experience rather than a big-numbers trolling day. Beginners are welcome — the shallow water and tailing fish are actually the easiest place in Roatan to learn to sight-cast, and our crew is used to first-timers. If you would rather work numbers and species variety, our morning half-day fishing charter or jig and bottom fishing charter are better matches.

Best Fishing Spots Around Roatan?
Roatan boasts numerous prime fishing spots. The deep waters off the island's northern coast are known for marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and mahi-mahi. The southern and western shores offer excellent inshore fishing — snapper, grouper, and barracuda. For fly fishing enthusiasts, the flats and mangroves are teeming with bonefish, permit, and tarpon.
What should we bring?
You will be in the Caribbean Ocean, on a boat for 4 to 8 hours. Bring sunglasses, hat, sun screen, and a towel. A rash guard shirt is good for the reef gives a nasty road rash if you rub against the reef. Any long sleeve shirt works.
Where do you pick up guests in Roatan? Do you offer hotel and dock pickup?
Yes. On the island, we offer complimentary boat pickup at any dock within about 3 miles of our home base at Gibson Bight Marina, including Sandy Bay, Lawson Rock, West Bay, and West End. If your hotel, Airbnb, or resort has a dock in that zone, we can pick you up there at no extra cost. For guests arriving by cruise ship, we run round-trip land transportation from the cruise terminals: Isla Tropicale, formerly known as Mahogany Bay (Carnival, Princess, Holland America) is $150 up to 6 guests, and Port of Roatan / Town Center (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, Virgin) is $125 up to 6 guests. Cruise-dock pickups use land transport rather than boat because the south-shore ports can have wave conditions unsafe for a boat approach. Our long-standing partnership with Captain Julio Bodden and Roatan Bilingual Tours provides a professional 15-passenger van for these transfers so cruise guests get a seamless door-to-marina experience.
