Jig and bottom fishing is Roatan's most productive way to put fish in the cooler. Where offshore trolling is about covering water and hoping the trophy shows up, jig and bottom fishing is about positioning over known structure — the reef edge, the drop-offs, wrecks, and deep humps — and working proven techniques until the fish commit. Our half-day jig and bottom fishing charter is 4 hours of focused, targeted bottom work.
Dos Reyes Roatan Charter departs Gibson Bight Marina in Sandy Bay. The 2024 custom 34-foot center console runs twin Yamaha 250HP motors that get you to productive structure in minutes rather than the hour-plus a slower charter would burn.
Captain Julio Bodden works a rotation of reef edge, drop-off, and structure spots depending on the day's conditions and target species. Standard jig and bottom fishing routes work the shallower reef edge for Snapper and Grouper, then move to deeper structure over the drop-off for Amberjack, deep-water Grouper, and larger reef predators. When conditions call for it, we drop electric reels to 1,200 feet for Yellow-Eye Snapper and other deep-water species most surface-focused charters never touch.
See the Roatan Fish Species and Best Bite Seasons Guide for a full month-by-month view of what runs when.
Vertical jigging uses metal jigs worked with sharp upward rod movements to imitate a wounded baitfish. Bottom fishing uses live and cut bait rigged for the target species. Both techniques require the boat to hold position over structure — our Garmin GPS and sonar system reads bottom topography in real time so we stay on the productive water. Captain Julio and first mate Eddie set up rigs, coach technique, and adjust based on what is biting that day.
